The fact that they are needed gives them their purpose—their “ikigai.” Ikigai is a Japanese term that, loosely translated, refers to their reason for getting out of bed in the morning.1 When considered with the fact that Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world, the benefits of a purpose-driven life are clear.2

How can you build your own purpose-driven life and create your own ikigai? Some say it comes down to the four S’s.

Social Strength – As in, the strength of your social relationships. Once you leave the workforce, do you have friends and family that you look forward to being with? Building these relationships before you leave the workforce positions you for a purpose-driven life post-retirement.

Structure – Why do you get out of bed in the morning once you don’t have to go to work? Who is counting on you? What difference are you making in your community?
